I heard this story just the other day which is a great analogy for online marketing...
As you know George Clooney is a huge worldwide star now but it wasn't always the case.
In his early days as an aspiring actor he auditioned for literally 100s of parts without being cast in any roles.
He was totally convinced he was one of the best actor's alive and couldn't understand why none of these film directors could see it.
In fact he was so confident in himself his ego would get in the way.
He'd act arrogantly and thought he DESERVED a role in the films.
As if he was doing the film directors a favour by even turning up, you know?
He would lambaste all the directors saying they didn't know a star when they saw one.
On top of his arrogance he was also getting pretty desperate.
No work means no money.
And no money means you can't pay the bills.
Clooney claimed the "system was messed up" and it was everyone else's fault but his own.
Why couldn't they see that not only was he a good actor but also really needed a break?
He just wouldn't accept that him not being given a role had anything to do with him personally as he was confident in his acting skills.
Eventually after 100s of rejections he realised something...
He realised that none of these directors cared about what Clooney wanted.
They didn't care that Clooney thought he was the best actor on the face of the earth.
And they didn't care that he had bills to pay and needed a break.
Those were Clooney's own personal problems.
The directors cared about their own problems.
The directors wanted an actor who solved their problems.
The directors wanted someone who would fit into their plans.
Not someone who thought the world owed him a living like Clooney.
So here's what he did...
He started to leave his ego, wants and needs at home.
And when he auditioned he focused on how to solve the directors problems.
He showed how he was the best solution to their problems.
How he would help make their dreams of creating a hit film a reality.
The result?
Suddenly Clooney was being cast in films left, right and centre.
And his career went from strength to strength.
The rest is history.
So what does this have to do with online marketing?
A lot.
If you're currently thinking like the broke and unfamous Clooney did in his early day you're screwed as a marketer.
No one cares that you are broke, tired, working too hard or can't pay the bills this month.
No one cares that you want to "make money on the internet", have more free time, more money or travel.
Harsh but true.
Everyone is too busy worrying about their own problems to care about yours.
So if that's the way you're approaching online marketing you'll never make any money.
You need to transform into the successful Hollywood superstar Clooney and show your prospects that you can solve THEIR problems.
As here's the thing...
You cannot make money, online or offline, without solving peoples problems, it's the fundamentals of ALL businesses.
If you don't focus on solving other peoples problems you'll stay trapped and broke and disappointed.
Ignore this advice as your own peril as if you do you'll continue to be disappointed.
